Updating The Nursery

I’ve always had an idea of how I would design a nursery for a baby girl, if ever given the chance. With Jack, we didn’t find out the sex until he arrived so I worked very hard to design a neutral nursery that wasn’t over the top, but was still a beautiful nursery.  The beauty of designing a gender neutral nursery the first time around, is that it is truly move-in ready for when she comes in May, and that’s where my husband would like the room to stay. However, if we’ve learned anything in the ten years I’ve been blogging and if you’ve been following along, you KNOW I have plans for her room.

For the first time ever, these plans don’t include paint, shocker (!), I know. It took me AGES to nail down the paint color for this room to begin with and the pale blue hue is still something I love every time I walk into the space. It’s bright and calming all at the same time. Most of the updates on my wish list are mainly to refresh the accessories and wall decor. I may not tackle all of these updates to the nursery before Baby Girl arrives, but I have already purchased a few items as we transition some of the wall decor and accessories to Jack’s new room.

I don’t want to make the room over-the-top girly, but I definitely want to bring a feminine touch to the space. Keeping the pale blue walls and existing furniture (source list here…picked up our crib from Homemakers and chair from a local shop, Suite Dreams), I want to pull in some richer color tones. Mauve, dusty pink, olive green, and eggplant purple to be exact. I would love to add some curtains to the space, there is a crack of light that pops in during the late summer nights that is hard to prevent the room from complete black-out status (which new parents know is KEY for optimal newborn sleep). I was looking at the room this morning though and I’m not sure I can hang curtains unless I want to loose the wall space on either side of the large window.

If the curtains don’t make sense, which I’m thinking they won’t,  I will look to bring in a olive green in another textile (play-mat, pillow, blanket, etc.). To bring in the mauve, eggplant, and dusty pink, I’m browsing so many crib sheet options on Etsy. I think it’s a DIY to be tackled, as I don’t know if I can justify $50 per crib sheet. We rotate through about 3 different sets of sheets for the past 2 years for Jack, and we will have those to mix in, but I just want some new colors for Baby Girl. Again, grey is a great color, but this mama is ready for some color!

Some things I’ve already purchased for the space would be two rattan wall hangings from a local shop here in Des Moines, Love & Grey. These are going to hang above the crib in lieu of the faux animal heads which may move into Jack’s room or I might sell them…haven’t decided yet. I have a small flamingo animal head that I want to incorporate which I found on super sale at Tuesday Morning, but just need to play around with the placement along with the wall hanging I picked up from Secret Holiday Co. (ordered this hanging in Mauve).

The round mirror above the dresser will move to Jack’s new bedroom and the old guest bedroom mirror will take it’s place. It’s a bit more feminine and will fit right into to new vibe of the nursery. For artwork, over the holidays I purchased a few downloaded prints from a small shop and printed them off at Walgreens. These prints will flank one side of the window. On the shelves, I will just swap out some stuffed animals for ones of her very own, we LOVE the brand Jellycat in this house. I haven’t decided if I will keep the penmanship art print and move it to Jack’s room or swap it out from something from Etsy (like this print – it’s just gorgeous).

Here are the mood boards I put together, I swapped out some of Jack’s decor with the new pieces to test them out but now they are back in the closet. We are getting new floors installed in the next few weeks (more to come on that), so until that project is complete, the decorating and installation of both Baby Girl’s room and Jack’s new bedroom are on hold.
