Here Comes the Sun – Lucy’s First Birthday

What a whirlwind of a year. Lucy turned one last week and we were able to celebrate in-person with our immediate family. With all of the adults fully vaccinated, we were able to finally hug one another and introduce Lucy to her aunt, uncle, and cousins. Being able to celebrate Lucy, in person, after spending a year virtually connecting to friends and family, was a moment we all needed, me especially. It helped give closure to a hard year (but also the best year spent with her) after mourning what I expected the end of my pregnancy, her arrival, and her first year to be vs. what we experienced due to the pandemic.

Whether we were spending her birthday with family or just the four of us in our immediate family, I was, of course, going to put together a balloon feature wall. Lucy was less than impressed and Jack wanted to pop all the balloons, but I’m so happy with how it all came together. I’m not super into “boho” themes, but this color mix I found online, paired with some cheeky balloons, helped me come up with this, “Here Comes The Sun” theme, very fitting for Lucy’s first year. We made it to the other side!

I bought all the balloons from this Etsy shop, the balloon inflator you can find on Amazon or Target and you can blow up the individual balloons at Party City or pick up your own helium tank (they are massive balloons and will take up a lot of helium…so splurge for the bigger tank or take them to get blown up) also available at Target. I followed this tutorial from YouTube.

Similar to Jack’s third birthday, I pulled toys we already had around the house for the décor, along with printing off her monthly photos at Walgreens (make sure to search for a discount code) and stuck them in Dollar Store gold frames. The kraft table runner and rose gold dinnerware I picked up at Target.

Her party day called for rain all week but it turned out to be warm and sunny. The cousins played outside all day (all the water toys) and we got to catch up as a family for the first time, in person, in a year. It was a perfect day. We did cake before nap, never a good idea, but Lucy enjoyed all the attention despite her pre-nap meltdown.

A year ago we didn’t know where we would be in a year with the pandemic and I’m so very thankful for modern medicine, for vaccines, and for allowing our family to safely gather for the first time in one place in over a year.

Happy Birthday Lucy James, we love you so Baby Girl!
