First & Second Trimester Q + A

I’m trying my very best to document my second (and probably last) pregnancy, so when I look back on my blog, which also happens to be a personal diary over the last ten years, I’ll remember what I felt and experienced during these times! I didn’t go too much into detail in my announcement posts, so for my own personal memory, here’s a little q + a about the past 22 weeks.

What were your very first signs of pregnancy? None – I just took a test because we were trying and I was close to when my period would come if I wasn’t pregnant. It didn’t take long for symptoms to appear, eventually I was super tired and nauseous, I needed to make sure I was ate something first thing in the morning! I did feel just as tired as I was with Jack but also, chasing a toddler around doesn’t allow for much time to just rest on the couch!

Were you trying for a baby? Yes! I thought it would take a lot longer after I had my IUD removed, we are very blessed & lucky that it happened quickly (I know that isn’t always the case for second pregnancies, or pregnancies in general, and if you are in that boat reading this, know I’m thinking of you). I was hoping for a fall baby, but we are going to have a late spring/early summer baby girl instead!

How are you feeling now? I definitely have more energy in the second trimester, the nausea subsided a week or so into the second trimester. I’m emotional (I can cry at the littlest things) and get tired despite my allotted coffee intake. Sleep has been hard, but I am trying a new pregnancy pillow and have been taking melatonin (OB approved) before bed which has helped me stay asleep instead of my normal middle of the night insomnia which leads to too much scrolling on Instagram. Also, HEARTBURN. It’s started early than the past time, not a fan.

Have you had any cravings? Snickers Ice Cream bars, Oreo Thins, BLTs, still love peaches like I did when I was pregnant with Jack. Lots and lots of cereal because that’s all I could really stomach my first trimester, nothing sounded that great!

Are you drinking coffee? In the first trimester I wasn’t super interested in coffee, but once I got my appetite back I craved it again. I have about a cup a day with some sugar and cream.

How and when did you tell your friends and family? Around 10 weeks we told family and close friends. I ended up telling some of my co-workers I was traveling with around 6-weeks (lots of fake drinking had to happen on a work trip).

When did you start to notice a bump? I had to retire my high-waisted jeans much sooner than I anticipated, but a little bump made its appearance around 15/16 weeks!

What maternity clothes have you bought so far? Re-wearing a lot of basics from when I was pregnant with Jack (lots of Old Navy Maternity jeans), I picked up some sweaters on super sale on Black Friday from Pinkblush Maternity to carry me through the winter. Otherwise, I’ve sized up in a few non-maternity things (mainly leggings and a dress or two) so I can wear them postpartum and next winter.

What is your current workout routine? Does chasing a toddler count? I don’t really have one, I’m so tired when I come home at night, BUT I do have the Expecting and Empowered Pregnancy guide I’m going to start doing, I want to be as strong as possible depending if we end up going the VBAC route or another c-section.

What did you do for the gender reveal party? We didn’t do a gender reveal party. After our ultrasound we had our tech put the photo in an envelope and we opened it over lunch right after the appointment. I was very shocked about finding out we were having a girl, I thought I would be a boy mom! We are very excited about baby girl joining our family, and at the end of the day we truly just want a healthy baby and pregnancy and that’s what we have so far!

Have you started on the nursery? We will be keeping the nursery, for the most part, as we designed it for Jack. It’s very neutral and I plan to swap out a few wall décor items to make it special for her as we redo our guest bedroom and turn into Jack’s new big kid room!

Do you have any names picked out? Not at all. We had a few boy names we loved, but now we are throwing around girl names and trying to see what lands. It’s going to be a game time decision once she arrives is what I’m assuming!

Is Jack excited? Does he know what’s going on? We’ve talked about the new baby since our first ultrasound. He knows there’s a baby in mommy’s tummy and that the ‘baby kick’ as he says. He’ll give the baby a kiss every once and awhile, it melts me to my core! He’s recently taken to an old doll of mine and will feed and rock the baby, so whether or not he truly understands what is about to happen, he’s getting exposed to us talking about another baby, his sister, and playing with the baby doll. I’m so excited for him to be a big brother!

When did you feel her kick? 17 weeks – and now at 22 weeks she is moving and grooving. It’s one of my favorite experiences while being pregnant – it’s strange and beautiful all at the same time.

Anything else? This pregnancy is flying by, and I truly think it’s because day to day I’m focused on my work, our family, and taking care of Jack between all of those moments. It doesn’t leave much down time like you have when you are pregnant with your first. Thankfully we will be reusing most everything from what we had when Jack was a newborn. I bought a Lovevery Playmat from Facebook marketplace (for $20…a serious steal), and we returned our Rock N’ Play due to the recall, so I’m trying to figure out what we will use in place of that because it was a product near and dear to my heart the first time around. I’m also debating that if we have another c-section that I want to buy or borrow a Halo bassinet from someone. Ours was the same height as our bed, but that puts baby even lower, and recovering from a c-section that’s just a lot of bending over and in/out of bed to grab baby in the middle of the night. It will be worth buying or borrowing a gently used Halo, if you ask me! Other than that, I may look into the Lovevery play kits, we have more than enough toys and such, and don’t feel like other than all the baby girl clothes that our families will be gifting us (I’ve been fair-warned), I don’t have much on my list! Oh, just one more thing…figuring out a double stroller. We currently have the UppaBaby Cruz stroller with the Mesa infant car seat (which we LOVE), I only wish we had invested in the Vista the first time around to save me the hassle of figuring it out this time. I’m looking at the Contour double stroller as it has a universal car seat base, which could work with the Mesa – most other stroller brands aren’t compatible with the Mesa, which makes things a little difficult. If the Cruz is still the right option for us (which we do love it), I’ll just add the kickstand for Jack. We haven’t used our stroller in ages, but two kids will most likely change that!
