It’s a weird time for fashion. Most are working from home and have found getting dressed is almost a thing of the past, helllooooo leggings. I am a member of that camp. When the stay at home orders started in March, I was eight months pregnant. I wore maternity leggings, big sweaters, and dresses with slippers. Once I had Lucy in May, my wardrobe didn’t change much, just added in some nursing friendly options.
Now that I’m back to work (from home), I find myself itching to get dressed again, even to go sit in my office for the day. The hot and humid temps of August prevent me from wearing a lot of what I’m itching to wear outside and I end up wearing athletic shorts and t-shirts half the time. I’m trying so hard to find motivation to get dressed every day, but I’ll take a day or two a week to start off with. I have Lucy home with us as we still navigate a global pandemic, so while I may not be pumping 3x a day, I am nursing on demand, so my wardrobe still needs to allow for easy access and be washable, because spit up and blow outs happen (real life over here people).
Over the past six months (and truly almost two years), I’ve become obsessed with a brand called Carly Jean Los Angeles. I stumbled across them on Instagram (seriously a goldmine of inspiration) and had purchased a pair of jeans when I was postpartum with Jack (The Carter’s). I ended up picking up a few of their items while pregnant with Lucy (all non-maternity and can wear postpartum as well), and let’s just say, I may have a bit of a problem (obsession?). Their philosophy is to provide women with easy mix and match pieces to help make the getting dressed process easy. They show different ways to wear each piece and encourage capsule wardrobes.
I swear by their denim (jeans and shorts), and they have the most beautiful dresses and tops. I’ve spent the better part of my pregnancy and maternity leave staring at a closet full of clothes that I haven’t worn for a better part of a year, that no longer fit (hellloooo boobs and hips…didn’t have you before babies), and that simply didn’t make me feel confident when I put them on. I purged a LOT of things and sent them off to find better homes. This is wear CJLA came in. I now have added in items to my wardrobe that I keep grabbing; I wear the same things over and over again. The beauty of a ‘capsule’ wardrobe is finding new ways to reinvent the clothes you own. You can do this too, it doesn’t have to be just from one brand specifically. I started gathering outfit inspiration on Pinterest, scouring tagged posts on Instagram and then piecing together looks from what I had in my closet that match my inspiration.
