Designing a Toddler Bedroom

I’m officially 20 weeks pregnant and have not bought a SINGLE thing other than a gray onesie during Black Friday for our newest addition. Instead of transforming our current nursery into a newly designed space, we will be focusing on turning our once guest bedroom into Jack’s big boy room. The nursery will get a few minor tweaks here and there as some of the accessories and wall art will move into Jack’s new room.

Over the holidays we gave away our guest bedroom furniture, headboard and all (but don’t worry, I kept the floral fabric). We moved a bunch of Jack’s toys into the room for the time being while we figure out next steps.

We aren’t any rush to move him out of the nursery, as the baby will be sleeping in our room for a few months (at least two) once they arrive. However; I know myself and I don’t want to leave Jack’s new room to the very end to design and install.

Here is a photo as it was designed and used for years (one of my favorite projects, EVER). Below are real life photos of the state of the room. Progress shots people, styled interior shots only ever look as good as the day they were photographed – then real life happens (aka beds piled with maternity clothes and outgrown toys, storage under beds, etc.), or better yet, random toys and books.

The Plan

Most of the changes being made in this room will be furniture based. I’m keeping the walls the Kelly green color (just need to touch it up in a few spots) and will now finally update the almond color trim to white (last bedroom that this needs to be done other than the bathrooms).

Here’s a quick mood board I pulled together of the space. It doesn’t feel 100%, but the general direction is there. I’ve also included a few inspiration shots of where I hope to land in the coming months on the space.

Now that Jack is two years old and we know his personality, I want to incorporate that in our design without making it too ‘kiddish.’ However, I need to figure out how to incorporate his love of Spider-Man, Toy Story, trucks, trains, and more trucks. He loves to climb and read, so making space for his Pikler Triangle and a little book-nook is a priority.

For the most part I will keep toys out of the space, like we do the nursery, and leave room for LOTS of books, a dresser, his bed, and some storage for stuffed animals and misc. things. Cody will be making a similar bed frame (but if you aren’t handy – this one is from Amazon), and most accessories will come from IKEA.

I want the bed and storage to be accessible to Jack and try to keep things fairly minimal with a little Montessori influence in how we go into designing the details of the space.
