A few weeks ago I was a on a return flight home from Panama City, Panama (did I mention I went on vacation?….whoops!), I found myself watching When Harry Met Sally. It got me thinking of what a classic, romantic comedy it was and what other movies could even begin to compare to it. The movie was written in 1989 and Nora Ephron’s take on relationships seemingly hold true in today’s world. I couldn’t help but laugh out loud when Sally’s friend pulls out her Rolodex of single men. We should be very thankful for the contacts function on our cell phones. I digress, but bottom line, the movie industry just doesn’t make ’em like they used to. I’ve rounded up my favorite feel good rom-coms by two of the best writers/directors, Nora Ephron and Nancy Meyers.
- When Harry Met Sally – “I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
- You’ve Got Mail – “The odd thing about this form of communication is that you’re more likely to talk about nothing than something. But I just want to say that all this nothing has meant more to me than so many somethings.”
- Father of the Bride – “I used to think a wedding was a simple affair. Boy and girl meet, they fall in love, he buys a ring, she buys a dress, they say I do. I was wrong. That’s getting married. A wedding is an entirely different proposition. I know. I’ve just been through one. Not my own, my daughter’s. Annie Banks Mackenzie. That’s her married name: Mackenzie. You fathers will understand. You have a little girl. An adorable little girl who looks up to you and adores you in a way you could never have imagined. I remember how her little hand used to fit inside mine. Then comes the day when she wants to get her ears pierced, and wants you to drop her off a block before the movie theater. From that moment on you’re in a constant panic. You worry about her meeting the wrong kind of guy, the kind of guy who only wants one thing, and you know exactly what that one thing is, because it’s the same thing you wanted when you were their age. Then, you stop worrying about her meeting the wrong guy, and you worry about her meeting the right guy. That’s the greatest fear of all, because, then you lose her. It was just six months ago that that happened here. Just six months ago, that the storm broke.”
- The Holiday – “Say a man and a woman both need something to sleep in and both go to the same men’s pajama department. The man says to the salesman, “I just need bottoms,” and the woman says, “I just need a top.” They look at each other and that’s the ‘meet cute.'”
- It’s Complicated – “And I like that you stopped getting bikini waxes. You’ve gone native. I was into it!”
